The next day after eating a big breakfast, the pups and I headed off to Mt. Rushmore which was only two miles away. Though the Presidents were quite impressive, the walk through the whole place took less than an hour. Unfortunately, the pups had to stay in the car. It seems that dogs aren't allow at Mt. Rushmore. I didn't understand why that was, because most of the stuff to see was outdoors. The parking lot was filled with several cars with barking dogs.
Next, it was off to Custer State Park to see the buffaloes. It cost eight dollars for a seven day pass. Which, if you think about it, it's a great deal, because this State Park is BIG. It would take several weeks to explore this park completely.
And yes....There were buffalo (Tatanka)...Hundreds of them. It was funny, because one might expect to see a herd of buffalo, and not expect to see just one all by itself out in the middle of nowhere. There were many occasions while driving through the park where I saw just one buffalo all by itself grazing.
The cool thing is that they would come right up to car. They seem to be uneffected by people. I really wanted to see a whole herd of them running, because I would imagine that it would sound a lot like rolling thunder. One lone buffalo ran along side of my car as I just happened to be going by. At first, I thought it was kind of cool, but then I started think...What if it decided to start smashing the side of my car with its horns. Then I quickly accelerated and left the sucker in the dust.
Next stop, Crazy Horse Monument and visitor Center. And hey, guess what...the darn mountain carving still isn't finish. WHEN, WHEN, are they planning on finishing it? I know it's not going to be in my lifetime. FINISH IT ALREADY!!!
The Visitor Center was pretty cool. It was spread out with lots of big rooms filled with painting done by famous artist (myself not included), and lots of indian artifacts. The Visitor Center is really a museum about the guy who started the project back in the early forties. It took a decade just to complete the head of Crazy Horse.
After leaving this place, I was tired and so I decided to head back to the cabin to relax. It's a good thing I did, because as soon as I got there, a bad storm came into the area. It was twice as worst as the one the day before.
