Petersburg National Battlefield Petersburg VA

Before stopping at the Petersburg National Battlefield in Petersburg VA. I just had to spend some time at the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in NC. When I got there, I discovered that there is a Cherokee Indian Reservation that makes up a portion of Smoky Mountain National Park. Like most of the indian reservation across the country, they too have a casino hotel. It looked new because there was still construction going on as I drove by. The indian population must be numerous to the local area, because I saw indians everywhere. I was astounded how commercialize the whole area was too. Novelty and gift shops were everywhere. Tourism is BIG!

And what's with all the BIKERS? They were everywhere.

The next day, I would find myself at the Petersburg National Battlefield in Petersburg VA. When I get to the visitor center, the perfect weather I've been experiencing since I left Texas was changing to not so perfect. The skies began to turn gray and it began to rain. In fact, it rained continuously for the next two days. But, the heavens would be nice to me on this day, because it only sprinkle a little and I was able to tour the whole battle site virtually dry.

The state of Virginia really has the battlefield thing down. They have the battlefields set up in such a way to where one can tour the battlefield site either by car or by foot. Most tours are guideless, but there are detailed markers everywhere explaining the chain of evens of the battle as they geographically and chronologically occurred.

After spending what turned out to be a scary night in Petersburg, It was off to Frederickburgs VA where I had planned to visit several battlefields. In fact, I was very very glad to leave Petersburg VA.
